Synopsis

This drama from renowned British director Ken Loach delves into the topic of zero-hour contracts and the effect of austerity on working-class families. Set in Newcastle-upon Tyne, Ricky and Abbie are parents struggling to survive after the 2008 financial crash. Having lost their mortgage, and with the pressure of Abbie’s demanding job as a nurse and carer, Ricky has no choice but to take on a job as a driver for a delivery company that will allow him to look after their young daughter and teenage son during the day. Turning out to be a highly exploitative job, and with Abbie facing similar struggles in her own career, tension grows in their personal lives. Based on interviews with workers in similarly precarious jobs, this film is a frank exploration and critique of how oppressive structures impact the lives of ordinary people.
