Synopsis

1918. World War One is in its fourth year and there is a stalemate in the trenches of Northern France, although rumours are spreading amongst the British that an imminent German offensive may break the deadlock. Led by a weary, increasingly disturbed Captain Stanhope, the men of C-company arrive to take their turn in the claustrophobic trenches, not knowing whether the attack will come while they are on the front line. Nervously awaiting their fate, they distract themselves with memories of their earlier lives, as Stanhope turns to alcohol. When a young officer, Raleigh, arrives fresh out of training he is excited to learn he will be serving under Stanhope, his former school house monitor. But he soon realises that life in the trenches is very different to that back home. Adapted from the famous stage play, this is an engrossing, hugely powerful story about a period of history that should never be forgotten.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
