During the early days of World War Two there was tremendous division amongst the British government between people who wanted the country to negotiate with Hitler – seeing the war as a lost cause – and those who wanted to fight on, despite seemingly insurmountable odds. At the centre of these debates, newly appointed Prime Minister Winston Churchill was faced with making the decision, as Nazi forces rampaged across Western Europe and the threat of invasion loomed imminent. This witty, engrossing drama tells the story of these events from Churchill’s perspective, providing fresh insight into the mental health of one of the country’s most familiar figures and a document of a remarkable period of history.
Colin Firth gives an award-winning performance as the stammering King George VI in British director Tom Hooper's film about the wartime monarch.
