Synopsis

Kai is a withdrawn middle-school student living with his superstitious grandfather in a small fishing village, having moved there from Tokyo. Invited to join his classmates’ band, Kai reluctantly accepts and together they head to Merfolk Island to practice where they meet fun-loving mermaid, Lu. But the people of Hinashi Town have always been suspicious of mermaids, believing them to bring disaster, and so Lu, Kai and his friends work together to ensure the survival of both communities. This film is an endearing anime full of energy, music and colourful characters.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
