Synopsis
11-year-old Toni spends most of her time training with her older brother at a local gym in Cincinnati. Despite being dedicated to boxing, she begins to become fascinated by the Lionesses, a drill dance troupe who rehearse in the room next door. Joining as a new dancer or 'crab', she quickly feels empowered by the sense of camaraderie and confidence amongst the slightly older, all-female team. Learning the challenging routines and making new friends, things take a mysterious turn when an outbreak of fainting spells begins to affect members of the team. Set almost entirely within the confines of the gymnasium, this absorbing film provides an acute insight into the psychological complexities of pre-adolescence, with a dreamlike perspective on the world.
