Documentary filmmaker Carol Morley’s first fiction feature is a distinctive, engaging tale of teenagers at a girls’ school in 1960s England. Whilst the girls are immersed in the dramas of coming of age, the school is overcome with a spell of mass fainting; a strange, trance-like state that strikes students at unexpected moments. At the centre of events is the intense friendship between Abbie and Lydia, whose relationship appears to be a catalyst for the strange occurrences. Compelling performances and a dizzying soundtrack leave the audience, like many of the adults in the film, unsure whether the girls actions are the expression of teen hysteria or the result of something truly supernatural.
A bizarre outbreak of suicides among the girls of one family is the focus of this intelligent, haunting Sofia Coppola film.
