Working with many great documentary filmmakers over the last 25 years, cinematographer Kirsten Johnson revisits the footage that has affected her most throughout her career. A film collage it is made up of interviews and outtakes from around the world that get to the heart of her experiences, even allowing us to overhear her own reactions to what her camera is observing. From a Brooklyn boxing ring, a Bosnian farm and a Nigerian midwife, to her own children playing and her mother suffering from Alzheimer’s, no narration is needed as she allows the images and sound to speak for themselves. Revealing the degree to which a camera can be a witness to worlds unknown, social issues and personal memories, Cameraperson also flags the ethics a filmmaker tousles with when events unfold in front of them. This is a fascinating and deeply engaging demonstration of why documentary is such an important medium.
A hypnotic and wordless vision of our complex and endangered world, cut to a mesmerising score by composer Philip Glass.
