Synopsis

Set in the 1920s, this is a fictionalised account of the life of Danish artist Einar Wegener. Despite a loving marriage to fellow artist Gerda, Einar becomes increasingly that he should be living his life as a woman, after being asked to stand in for a female model. At a time when issues around trans identity were relatively unheard of, we watch as Einar tentatively transitions into her true identity as Lili. Gradually overwhelmed by the situation, Lili seeks medical help and becomes one of the first known people to undergo male to female sex reassignment surgery. Supported by Gerda throughout, the story is as much about their relationship and the affect of Lili’s awakening on them both as it is of the historic significance of the surgery.
