Synopsis

In 1820, the whaling ship Essex was cripplingly assaulted by an enormous sperm whale, resulting in a frantic scramble for survival amongst its crew, who pushed themselves to scarcely comprehensible limits to stay alive. The extraordinary story would go on to inspire Herman Melville to write his classic novel Moby Dick. This film tells of the ill-fated voyage through flashbacks told to Melville, drawing vividly on the experiences of first mate Owen Chase and his relationship with inexperienced Captain, George Pollard. Combining sweeping, old-fashioned adventurous storytelling with lavish visuals and immersive cinematography, the result is an engrossing seafaring yarn that will draw audiences to the book its events inspired.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
