Synopsis

Bianca is a bright, content high school student, who is one day horrified to discover that her peers see her as “the DUFF” (designated ugly fat friend) amongst her friends. Not to be taken literally, “duffness” refers to universal anxieties about fitting in and feeling like a third wheel. Despite warnings from those who care about her, Bianca sets about reinventing herself, with the help of jock-next-door Wesley, alienating her friends and damaging her sense of self in the process. Amidst the teen movie conventions, this very funny film contains pertinent messages around cyber bullying and issues surrounding body image that are guaranteed to provoke debate.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
