Synopsis

A historical drama based on a true story well known in Denmark, but perhaps lesser known beyond its borders. In the 18th century, Denmark’s 15-year-old queen, Caroline Mathilde, had an affair with her doctor. Although very young, Caroline was well-read and wanted desperately for women to have more control over their lives. Complicating matters was the king’s delicate mental condition. The film powerfully dramatises how personal desire and public duty become entwined while also revealing the conflict between a new generation who challenged the dominance of the nobility.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
