Synopsis

This thought-provoking comedy explores the ideals writers project onto their imaginary creations, by investigating what happens when fiction meets reality. Calvin is a struggling writer, complaining to his therapist that he cannot generate credible stories. He begins to write about a fantasy character called Ruby Sparks, and is astonished when she appears in his life. They begin a romance that he seems to be able to manipulate through his writing. Ruby is played by Zoe Kazan, who is also the film's screenwriter. Her grandfather, Elia Kazan, was a famous Hollywood filmmaker whose made A Streetcar Named Desire.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
