Synopsis

During the 2002 Major League Baseball season the Oakland A's became synonymous with failure - limping to 11 straight defeats whilst surviving on a shoestring budget. What followed remains the biggest 'curveball' in US sports history. The turning-point arrives when perfectionist manager Billy Beane employs a bashful university graduate with a revolutionary thesis – players should be purchased purely on their performance statistics; their commercial value, personality and potential deemed irrelevant. While the high-risk strategy begins to deliver results on the pitch, the friction caused by the cultural shift threatens an irrevocable implosion in the boardroom. Thanks to a typically razor-sharp script from Aaron Sorkin and Pitt’s authentic portrayal of a tortured soul, this film ascends past the superficial gloss of a routine sports drama and addresses universal themes with considerable substance.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
