Jack Torrance is a writer who takes a role as caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in Colorado during the long winter months, so he can concentrate on writing his book. With his wife Wendy and son Danny in tow, the isolation initially appears to be ideal. However, with his writer’s block refusing to lift, Jack begins to lose his sanity. Meanwhile, Danny is plagued by increasingly disturbing psychic visions, as the old hotel gradually reveals its horrifying secrets and Jack’s descent into madness has terrifying, violent consequences for his family. This iconic horror film, from legendary director Stanley Kubrick, touches upon themes of isolation, mental health and trauma whilst also being known as one of the best examples of the genre.
