Growing up is painful - especially when it comes to handling love and loss. But as 11-year-old tomboy Vada discovers, during an eventful slice of 1972, accepting life's hurtful realities is the vital step towards healing. A morbid hypochondriac, the youngster blames herself for her mum dying while giving birth to her, and is now suffering additional angst thanks to her mortician dad finally finding new romance. Fortunately, a summer of gentle fun and adventure with her outcast best mate Thomas brings happiness and fresh perspectives - not to mention a glorious first kiss! As a result, after personal tragedy strikes again, Vada faces it with heart-touching maturity. Treating serious issues with admirable compassion, this well-acted coming-of-age tale is bittersweet and unashamedly manipulative.
This film contains moderate language, mild drug references and use and themes of illness and death. Some scenes could be upsetting for younger viewers.
