The Friedmans seemed to be a typical suburban family, until the father, Arnold, and later one of his sons, Jesse, were charged with child sexual abuse. Director Andrew Jarecki followed the family as the men awaited trial, creating a documentary that allows the viewer to decide the extent of their guilt in the face of a media witch-hunt. In an extraordinary move, Jarecki was given access to the Friedmans' home movies that, incredibly, they continued to film throughout the trial. A portrait of an apple-pie family with something very rotten at the core.
