The title of this acclaimed Danish movie translates as "The Celebration" - but there's little joy for the characters amid the edgy, powerful human drama. The extended family of a respected patriarch are gathered together for his 60th birthday - but the occasion is overshadowed by the recent suicide of one of the man's daughters. And when one of his sons decides that he's had enough of keeping the family's secrets, there are life-changing consequences for everyone. Festen was made under the principles of "Dogme 95" - a way of making films that sought to get down to the bare bones of the both the form and of human relationships. The results are sometimes tough to watch - but also startlingly brave, and with an unforgettable ring of truth.
