This series of five English lessons focus on exploring the complex relationship that modern teenagers have with the internet, through segments of the documentary InRealLife. Students consider the internet experiences, both positive and negative, of different groups of young people, and try to raise understanding of the impact of the Internet on modern life. 

The many debate and discussion elements of this resource promote oracy.

Lesson One - The Internet: What Do I Think? 

Designed to engage students in thinking about some of the issues associated with Internet use, this lesson asks them to think about themselves as both consumers and objects of the internet, exploring their thoughts through an online presentation. 

Learning Objectives:  

  • Speak to communicate clearly and purposefully 
  • Structure and sustain talk, adapting it to different situations and audiences
  • Use standard English and a variety of techniques as appropriate.

Lesson Two - How Much is Too Much? 

Exploring the things that drive us to use the Internet and also how this can develop into addiction. Learners use their knowledge to create a campaign video, warning against the dangers of addiction.

Lesson Three - Where is the Net? 

In this lesson, students are encouraged to explore the Internet as a commercial object, considering the roles of the major corporations behind the world-wide web, before debating their findings.

  • Sustain interpretations of text 
  • Write imaginatively and organise information using a variety of structural forms

Lesson Four - The Dark Side of the Net 

Students engage with the consequences of internet misuse, specifically cyber-bullying, before writing blogs to consider the Internet's role in perpetuating abuse.

Lesson Five - A Modern Love Story 

The final lesson of the sequence focuses on the positive aspects of the Internet, focusing on a relationship between two young men that is driven by their communication through the Internet. Students evaluate their own communication online through the creation of a video diary.
