Congratulations to young people from Working Class Film School in Manchester, England, whose film Unveiled Voices has won Best Documentary (sponsored by 72 Films) at the Into Film Awards 2026.
Unveiled Voices explores what being brown and female means to a group of young Muslims from Oldham. Interviews with group and community members explore 'brown' as something not only linked to colour or ethnicity, while also challenging gender expectations that determine what women can and can't do.
The film was made by a group of 14 young filmmakers, supported by three youth centre staff and Hafsah Naib, lead facilitator at Working Class Film School.
The young people were very easily able to identify a lack of visibility when it came to young Muslim women with South Asian heritage and were inspired to do something about it. They developed a very quick understanding of cinematography, lighting and interview techniques and applied this semi-autonomously out in the public space when conducting interviews.
"The group felt thrilled to be making connections with people in their community through this style of filmmaking", explained Naib. "It really made them feel that film was a special team activity."
"Some of their editing decisions were excellent and clearly demonstrated deep and committed storytelling abilities. Their technical set-up often involved camera, sound boom and reflectors which they operated well. Their learning also covered how to be inclusive with ideas and work in a co-creation manner that valued everyone's input and creative expression."
