To celebrate the release of Tom Hooper's Cats last December, we created a series of PSHE-led lesson plans on the theme of Character and Community. Taking inspiration from the diverse characters in Universal's film, pupils were able to thoughtfully consider identity and personality types before entering our persuasive writing competition. The winner is revealed below…
The competition challenged children to display their grasp of descriptive and persuasive language and produce a piece of first-person creative writing reflecting on their own school communities. Drawing on what they had discussed in relation to Cats, pupils were asked to think about what makes their schools accepting and inclusive, and how adults and classmates contribute to making everybody feel safe, supported, and confident.
We are pleased to reveal that the winner is 11-year-old Anjola from Hillside School in Portlethen, Aberdeenshire. Congratulations to Anjola for successfully convincing us that Hillside is the UK's most welcoming and inclusive school! Anjola wins Cats goodies, plus a private screening of the film for the whole class.
Our Cats Character and Community resource supports PSHE and literacy learning, engaging with themes of acceptance and redemption and supporting pupils to create their own expressions of these in creative writing.
