There is also DVD releases for your film club, a new film list and a fascinating Welsh short film you can access through Into Film+.

Black Widow
Taking place before the monumental events of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the fearless and calculating Natasha Romanoff, AKA Black Widow, finally has her superhero roots revealed. Despite being a long standing member of The Avengers, little is known about Natasha's past but this film delves into her family and history as a trained assassin. Scarlett Johansson reprises her most famous role and is joined by British actor Florence Pugh as her cynical sister Yelena, both of whom take part in some spectacular action set pieces. Exploring the effect that family can shape our lives as well as celebrating womanhood, Black Widow exemplifies the need for the cinema experience.

New on DVD
Minari; Nomadland
Two of 2021's most accalimed films arrive on DVD in time for your summer film clubs. Potentially the most celebrated film of the year is director Chloé Zhao's Nomadland, a gorgeously shot odyssey through a different side of America that follows a woman in her sixties as she recovers from losing her home by embarking on a journey as a modern-day Nomad. Winner of the Academy Awards® for Best Picture and Best Director, this film is an empathetic look at class and humanity.
Meanwhile, one of he year's more unexpected hits with critics and audiences has been Minari, a film that chronicles the struggles of a Korean family in the 1980s who move to the southern United States with a dream of starting a farming business. Despite its specific subject matter, and with a startling child performance from Alan S. Kim at its center, Minari has resonated with audiences throughout the world with its nuanced look at the immigrant experience.
New Film Lists
We have also been curating fresh film lists on all kinds of themes and subjects across the curriculum and this week we turn our attention to Robots and Artificial Intelligence. As technology has become more prevalent in our everyday lives as the decades have passed by particularly in the 21st century combined with scientific progress around cloning and the creation of artificial intelligence, cinema has followed in fear and wonder. From robots to drones, filmmakers have represented machines in their many forms in sci-fi classics, and even in other genres, and will no doubt continue to innovate around the topic as time goes by.
New Shorts from Into Film
Tryweryn; The Story of Plastic
Fresh for our members to watch for free on Into Film+, two shorts that fall into the unusual, but imaginative, genre of animated documentary.
The first, Tryweryn, tells the story of Capel Celyn, a small village in North Wales which housed a close community of families across multiple generations. It provides a timeline of events across 1955, 1956 and 1957 which began with Liverpool council sending academics to the area to scope out plans for a reservoir and submitting a bill allowing them to bypass planning permission. Presented in Welsh with English subtitles, this sombre short film from a young Welsh filmmaker is a powerful reminder of a significant moment in the story of Wales.
And just in time for Plastic-Free July, The Story of Plastic investigates the state of the plastics industry and gives a brief overview of the entire manufacturing process: extraction, transport, refining, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. It also highlights what we can expect and how we should approach our use of plastic in the future. The Story of Plastic provides a great introduction to environmentalism and sustainability.
