Lion (2016), is directed by Garth Davis and tells the true story of a young boy named Saroo (Dev Patel/Sunny Pawar). This film is emotional and is a great hidden gem within the industry. The film follows Saroo, a boy from India who is separated from his family. Speaking no bengali and without money, Saroo finds it hard to find his way home and must learn to adapt in a third world country. This is until he is adopted by an Australian couple hoping to start their own family. We pick up with Saroo as a man and follow his quest to find his mother.
The film gives a great insight into poverty and the harshness of life in India and how dangerous the country can be. Dev Patel’s performance is similar to those in “Hotel Mumbai” and “The Wedding Guest” because of the raw emotions that he shows through his films.
I feel that Lion is a good and helpful movie to watch because of how it makes us feel. It is a powerful type of film that I rarely see. I would recommend this film to anyone 12 and over because I feel that you need to have a basic understanding of what is happening in India in order to get the most out of the film. Even though the film is a slow starter, it is still worth watching the whole way through because it really picks up at around the halfway mark. Overall, I think this is a fantastic film and I would highly recommend watching it!
