Director Jacques Demy's enchanting French musical is a bittersweet story of young love, told entirely in song, without a single word of spoken dialogue. 17-year-old Genevieve helps her widowed mother in the umbrella shop. She is secretly in love with Guy, a car mechanic and they spend the night together before he leaves to serve in the army. Genevieve falls pregnant, but with Guy away at war, her mother encourages her to marry a wealthy gem merchant and forget her first love.
Oscar-winning musical comedy that's a brilliant explosion of colour and energy despite an utterly un-PC plotline.
