Synopsis

One of the most famous photographic images of the Second World War is of American troops raising their nation's flag on the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima. Clint Eastwood's sober, intelligent film examines how the photo became a propaganda tool, and the effect it had on the lives of three of the marines involved in the image. While others continued fighting, they were removed from the scene of the bloody battle and sent on a whirlwind publicity tour of their home country. The film formed part of a powerful double-bill, alongside Eastwood's Letters From Iwo Jima, which told the story of the same battle from the Japanese perspective.
