This sly but warm-hearted British movie from the legendary director David Lean tells a classic tale of the dangers of greed. At the start of the story, set in Lancashire in the 1880s, the portly Horatio Hobson has become wealthy by making his three daughters work for him for free in his upmarket shoe shop, and exploiting the talents of a modest shoe-maker named Willie Mossop. But his eldest daughter Maggie has had enough - and soon the tables start turning on her father in this likeable comedy that features a great performance from actor Charles Laughton as Horatio Hobson.
Melanie Griffith stars as an ambitious secretary who starts a new job working for a nightmare boss and falls for an executive.
