Synopsis

In 1960’s America, racial tensions between black and white citizens manifested differently from the way they do today. This landmark film in American cinema addresses these tensions through the fictional story of a newly engaged couple; Joanna "Joey" Drayton, a white socialite, and the highly qualified Dr. John Prentice, a black man. When Joey returns from a holiday in Hawaii to introduce John to her liberal parents, Matt and Christina Drayton, their prejudices soon rise to the surface and when John’s parents also arrive to the dinner party, conversations around race, family and love become even more troubling to navigate. A much-discussed piece of cinema history which has influenced many more contemporary films that followed it, such as Jordan Peele’s Get Out, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a brilliant balance of comedy and drama which still resonates for many audiences today.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
