When it comes to locations for car chases, few cities can compare to hilly San Francisco - and few actors could have been more suited to the role of hard-nosed, risk-taking police detective Frank Bullitt than Steve McQueen. Bullitt is chosen to protect a mafia informant by ambitious politician Walter Chalmers, but when the witness and a colleague finds themselves fighting for their lives after an assassination attempt, the plot thickens and the tension escalates. This film is perhaps best remembered for the superb editing of the classic car chase scenes, but there's so much more to enjoy in this tense, high-energy thriller, which has left numerous action films in its wake and influenced many others.
