Synopsis

Erin, a 23-year-old English teacher at a high school in Long Beach, California, is struggling to get through to her unruly students, whose day-to-day reality is governed by racial tension and gang violence. As the fighting escalates, Erin uses the classroom as a space to deconstruct the issues that the young people are facing, encouraging them to write about their experiences of losing loved ones and dealing with hardships. Using the example of the Holocaust to explore the meaning of humanity and persecution, Erin starts making some headway with her students, leading to some brave decisions outside the classroom too. Adapted from the best-selling book by real-life teacher Erin Gruwell, this is a powerful and inspiring piece of filmmaking with a central message of hope and optimism.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
