Synopsis

Based on the best-selling autobiography by Irish author Frank McCourt. McCourt's large family were very poor when he was growing up in both New York and Limerick, where they returned in the 1930s after the death of his baby sister. His mother Angela bravely tried to keep the family together, despite his father's alcoholism. The events of the film are hilarious and tragic in turn (and sometimes at once), as young Frank comes of age amid the chaos and dreams of returning to America. His individual story reflects some poignant truths about human nature.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
