During World War I, the soldier-poet Siegfried Sassoon suffered a breakdown when he decided that there was no point to the fighting. Rather than facing military justice, his friends in high places made sure he was sent to a mental hospital to "come to his senses". This film, based on the novel by Pat Barker, tells his story, and that of other traumatised soldiers being treated by doctors who were only starting to understand the terrible effect that war can have on the mind.
