An inept and lazy small-time criminal is sent off by his bullying wife to take a neighbour's grandson to see his long-lost mother - and their lack of funds turns this into a slow and difficult journey hitchhiking through Japan. There's nothing cute or slushy about this low-key road movie, which relies on deadpan humour and the variety of strange characters the pair meet along the way - and which shows a very different Japan than the super high-tech one we usually imagine.
This film has a couple of uses of mild bad language
