Eric Arthur Blair, better known under his pen name George Orwell, remains one of the most important reference points for dystopian literature, with his mid-20th century novels ‘1984’ and ‘Animal Farm’ still widely studied in schools today. His criticism of oppressive regimes and collective morality is as urgent and relevant as ever, as this documentary explores by interweaving archive footage of film adaptations of his works with a tapestry of juxtaposing and resonant news footage from the 21st century. From Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to book banning in the USA, the film dissects propaganda and totalitarianism through an Orwellian lens, drawing links between political euphemisms and ‘newspeak’. Extracts from the author’s letters also paint a picture of his own developing moral and political conscience, inviting the audience to see contradictions such as ‘ignorance is strength’ for what they are, and inviting us to choose to resist.
Classification strong violence, injury detail, images of real dead bodies
