In this whimsical and immersive animation, a young child called Amélie explores the world around her with delight and awe. At the age of two and a half years, little Amélie has her sense awoken by a single bite of white chocolate offered by her granny – and with this, a mighty joyfulness and irrepressible curiosity also awaken. It is in this state of newfound euphoria that she meets Nishio-San, the kind housekeeper hired by her Belgian parents who are raising their family here in Japan, in the late 1960s. Nishio-San plays with little Amélie and teaches her things about the local culture and language. But the complicated feelings that the grownups still carry in the post-war period, along with other realities of life, threaten to burst Amélie’s innocent bubble. Based on a memoir, this adorable and funny film explores profound yet innocent reflections on life through its accessible and creative visuals.
