The story opens aboard a steamship crossing the Atlantic Ocean in which an unnamed immigrant, known only as the Little Tramp, roams around the vessel. As the boat sways heavily, causing much sliding around the deck and seasickness in some of the passengers, the Little Tramp plays cards and eats in the mess hall before encountering a woman who he befriends. The woman (also unnamed) is travelling to America with her mother, but they have been robbed of their remaining funds by a pickpocket. The Little Tramp attempts to win back their money in a card game before they arrive in New York, where further hijinks occur. ‘The Immigrant’ is one of Charlie Chaplin’s most iconic films featuring trademark slapstick routines.
