May 7, 1945: the last day of the War in Europe. Hermann Göring’s vehicle is stopped by the US Army where he surrenders without protest and is taken into custody. With three of the most high-ranking Nazis in Adolf Hitler, Joseph Goebbels and Heinrich Himmler already dead by suicide, the Allied Forces – USA, UK, France, and Russia – must decide what how they intend to proceed with the most prominent remaining member of the party. American prosecutor Robert H. Jackson is keen to convince other powerful figures that the remaining Nazis should be put on trial rather than executed. While he seeks to get approval from the US President, Congress, the other allies, and even the Pope, a psychiatrist named Douglas Kelley is tasked with evaluating Göring’s mental state over a number of sessions so that he can pass judgement over whether he’s even fit to stand trial. ‘Nuremberg’ is an engaging and propulsive drama which explores the ethics, legalities, and historical context of the Nuremberg trials.
