Synopsis

Set in the wake of the 1979 UK general election and based on historical events, Margaret Thatcher’s newly elected Conservative government have recently pulled back on a manifesto promise to establish a Welsh-medium TV channel - a pledge that had held deep cultural significance for many Welsh speakers. As frustration grows across Wales, Gwynfor Evans, a veteran politician and campaigner, responds by pledging to undertake a hunger strike to the death unless the government upholds its promise, hoping this act of political protest will spotlight the urgency of preserving and promoting the Welsh language. Utilising an entertaining form of dark comedy and focusing on a sub-plot around the broader grassroots movements of the time, this film highlights themes of linguistic rights, national identity, political promises, and civic activism.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
