Synopsis

In 2007, the eccentric environmentalist Lucy Mirando becomes CEO of the Mirando Corporation, succeeding her cruel twin sister. As part of the announcement, she reveals that they have been breeding a special kind of ‘super pig’, with 26 specimens sent to farmers around the world, and one to be crowned winner in ten years’ time. A decade later, a teenage girl named Mija is living on a farm in rural South Korea with her grandfather and their super pig, Okja. Mija and Okja have a very close relationship, but one day they are visited by Mirando’s spokesperson, a zoologist named Dr. Johnny Wilcox, who declares Okja the winner of their contest, who will now be taken away to New York City. Devastated by their imposed separation, Mija follows Okja to Seoul, where she encounters an environmental group – the Animal Liberation Front – who seek to expose the truth behind Mirando’s mistreatment of animals. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, ‘Okja’ is a one-of-a-kind eco-thriller with themes around animal welfare, activism, and corporate greenwashing.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
