Synopsis

: In the midwestern state of Indiana, the head of James Madison High School’s PTA, Mrs. Greene, announces the cancellation of prom because lesbian student Emma Nolan had planned to attend with her girlfriend, Mrs. Greene’s closeted daughter. Meanwhile, four Broadway stars who have each recently faced rejection in the form of bad reviews and disappointing parts decide that they need a cause to revitalise their careers. Led by Barry Glickman and Dee Dee Allen, the actors head on a road trip to Indiana after discovering the story on social media. Emma is bullied at school by some of her classmates who blame her for ruining their end-of-year celebrations, but when Barry and Dee Dee show up to protest the PTA’s decision, the town becomes a media sensation. Adapted from the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name, ‘The Prom’ is an inclusive and progressive high-school story about community, acceptance, and being proud of who you are.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
