Synopsis

On the edge of the Borneo rainforest in Indonesia, there’s a school like no other, where the class is made up of rescued orphaned orangutans. Having been raised in captivity, they now need to learn skills like climbing, foraging, and socializing with others of their kind before they can safely be released into the wild where they belong. These playful primates are our closest animal relatives, but due to poaching, habitat destruction and the illegal pet trade, they are now one of the world’s most endangered species. This documentary follows the keepers and vets who look after these young, rescued apes and explores the steps involved in rehabilitation: from making sure that the animals are healthy, to encouraging them to find food for themselves, to finally “graduating” from orangutan school. With important lessons on respecting animals, this is a gentle insight into the world of wildlife conservation.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
