Synopsis

Tom Daley became one of the most high-profile LGBTQ individuals in the UK when he came out via YouTube in 2012. This documentary follows Tom as he examines homophobia in the run up to the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Homosexuality is illegal in over half of commonwealth member states, several countries even carrying the death penalty for being gay. At a time when discussions about the link between sport and politics dominates the discourse surrounding major sporting events, Daley travels across the commonwealth to talk to LGBTQ+ athletes, many of whom are forced to conceal their identities for fear of blackmail, recrimination, and violence. Tom also spends some time looking back at his own experiences, growing up facing homophobic bullying whilst at school in the UK and the struggles he faced after coming out. This powerful documentary culminates in a moving sequence at the Games’ opening ceremony, where Daley was joined by LGBTQ+ athletes from across the world in a defiant and inspirational statement against homophobia.
