Microaggressions are everyday slights, whether intentional or unintentional, that reveal hostility or bias towards people of colour. This short film explores the many microaggressions - as well as the overt racism - faced by young Black people in the UK. Taking inspiration from a series of tweets, the film reveals the tiring assumptions about who Black people are and how they should behave, from being stopped by police to being questioned about your name at a job interview. Despite its subject matter, the film also celebrates Black experiences and identities through spoken word poetry. Directed by a young British filmmaker, 'Being Black' gives insight to the way Black people are othered within society on a daily basis and the real effect this has on mental health and a feeling of belonging in the UK.
