In 2011, filmmaker Mark Cousins released a 15-part series on the history of cinema from its birth to the present day titled ‘The Story of Film.’ This film builds upon that and looks at the changes which have arrived in the decade since, from technological advancements off-screen to the new characters, worlds, and breaking down of barriers on it. Cousins’ epic film essay interrogates which titles have expanded upon those which have come before – pushing conventions and showing a new way of doing things – as well as those films which have re-written the rules altogether. Drawing on both contemporary and history titles from all around the world, showing how they link together, this documentary is both accessible and challenging for those interested in studying the language of cinema.
