Synopsis

Now known as two of the greatest tennis players to ever set foot on a court, Venus and Serena Williams were not always destined for great things. This biopic details their upbringing in Compton, California and focuses on their father, Richard Williams, who always believed they could take the tennis world by storm if given the opportunity. Closed off from the tennis community because of their race and class, we see how Richard and his wife Brandy struggled with playing the roles of father, mother and coach whilst dealing with their own precarious marriage. King Richard is a sharp and emotional look at the early days of two sporting icons and their support network whilst also being a wholly entertaining story with a fantastic lead performance.

What our educators say

"Some of them saw a clip from Wakolda (The German Doctor) on TV recently and really wanted to watch it. So I thought I’d take a chance, not expecting them to watch the whole film but the majority were absolutely gripped. "
