Synopsis

15 August, 1939: 17 days before the start of World War II. A schoolteacher at the Augusta Victoria College in the coastal town of Bexhill-on-Sea goes missing, with his replacement Thomas Miller drafted in at short notice. When questioned by the enigmatic headmistress of the school as to why he would want to work at a finishing school for daughters of the Nazi elite, Englishman Miller reveals that his father is German. When the body of the schoolteacher washes up on the nearby beach, Miller suspects wrongdoing and goes looking for clues. While doing so, at a party attended by foreign officers, he overhears a conversation in which a German agent reveals to another teacher, Ilse, of his plans to repatriate the girls to their homeland in the coming days. As he attempts to inform the British authorities however, he finds himself at the centre of a spy conspiracy. ‘Six Minutes to Midnight’ highlights a fascinating element of European history while also serving as an accessible introduction to conspiracy thrillers.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."
