Synopsis

Algiers, 1997. Islamic terrorist groups seek to oppress the female population and control their behaviour, limiting what they can wear and where they can go. Nedjma – also known as Papicha – is a passionate fashion student and along with her friends decides to rebel against the state by pursuing education, attending social events and refusing to wear the hijab, despite the threat which this carries. She also argues with her boyfriend who wants to leave Algeria as the danger begins to escalate, whereas she is determined to stay, fight and face the consequences of her actions. After a tragic incident within the community, Nedjma decides to stage the ultimate form of rebellion by putting on a fashion show with her friends. ‘Papicha’ is a story about a significant historical moment in modern politics and the ongoing fight for women’s rights around the world.

What our educators say

"We are currently screening The Wizard of Oz, profound film that it is, and the last film Wall-E. It's been rewarding observing the KS1 6 year olds run the gamut of emotions from wonder to sadness to joy. "
