Although many people may not have heard of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, he was once believed to be the wealthiest man in Russia. Known as one of the seven oligarchs, rich businessmen who were able to influence Russian and international politics through media and money during the 1980s, Khodorkovsky’s prosperity and power did not last forever. Famed documentarian Alex Gibney explores the almost unbelievable tale of corruption and betrayal that led to Khodorkovsky spending a decade in a Siberian prison and eventually emerging as an unlikely adversary to the reign of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Gibney presents this story with enough clarity that anyone with even a passing interest in history or politics will find themselves sucked into this remarkable, and continuing, story of one man’s turbulent life.
