Synopsis
Fiddler on the Roof is one of the most successful musicals in Broadway history. Set in Russia and with a story centred on Jewish religion and heritage, the production explores themes surrounding prejudice against Jewish people, while also being a very accessible musical about family and community. This documentary explores the musical’s beginnings, closely looking at the writing of its famous songs such as ‘If I Was A Rich Man’ and the unique preparation that went into its premieres in 1964. Fascinatingly, the film explores the political climate of the time and the defiance of a musical that centred a marginalised community, as well as its themes of race, gender and sexuality.
