China’s controversial one-child-per-family policy came into effect from 1979 and lasted until as recently as 2015, and was advertised everywhere: on lunchboxes, playing cards, calendars and posters. After becoming a mother, first-time filmmaker Nanfu Wang decides to investigate the repercussions this policy had on the country. This documentary does not so much debate the ethics around the policy in and of itself, but instead examines the black markets which effectively sprung up as a result of it, leading to widespread human rights abuses. These include forced sterilizations and abortions on a mass scale, houses being destroyed, kidnappings and shady adoptions, with a gender bias meaning that boys were valued more than girls. ‘One Child Nation’ is a tough watch but a powerful insight into an important piece of modern world history.
Thought-provoking documentary highlighting one Palestinian farmer's attempts to record the violence and injustice he witnesses on a daily basis.
