Synopsis

Studio Ghibli is a name synonymous with exciting animation, instantly recognisable from mascot Totoro from one of their early outputs through to their beautiful films from the 21st century, such as Spirited Away and Ponyo. In this documentary, we follow the working life of legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki and those closest to him as he prepares to release his final film, The Wind Rises. At the same time, Isao Takahata – Miyazaki’s mentor, friend and rival – is laboriously working on The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, leaving producer Toshio Suzuki to handle the simultaneous release of both films. This documentary gives a unique behind-the-scenes viewpoint into the craft, energy and industry that goes into the creative process.

What our educators say

"It really is a chance for us to open children's minds to the power of film not just as a vehicle for entertainment but also as a way in to understanding their own world and the worlds of people whose lives are very different."

- Marlon Perkins, Teacher, Whitstable and Seasalter Endowed CofE Junior School, Kent
