Set in North East Scotland, Sunset Song depicts the life of Chris Guthrie, a farmer’s girl growing up at the beginning of the 20th century. Poor and remote, the family struggle under the violent rule of their father yet Chris remains dedicated to her books and loyal to her family’s land. This is an adaptation of a classic Scottish novel which initially shocked readers with its course depiction of childbirth and sex. Made by British director Terence Davies, known for his nostalgia for the past, as well as exposing the family’s suffering, the film celebrates the land and the community through luscious shots of the landscape. Taking love, death and World War One in her stride, the film reveals Chris to be one of literature’s great female characters and an enduring symbol of hope.
Contains strong implied sex and scene of sexual violence.
